Is Christianity a Problem?

Image
Dr Chancellor Williams an influential historian among many Africans said this about the Early Christianity brought by Western missionaries and their nations, that they “used Christianity to spread their hidden agendas of conquest and for the imposition of their Western values, ideas turning the African man into the white man’s image (Williams 1987:56).” here he said that conversion to Christ did not become central to many of these missionaries but was replaced with the conversion of the African man to European civilization. From such a quote and many others similar to it stems the claim that Christianity brought by Europeans was a white man religion, introduced to Africans through Western colonisation with the purpose of pacifying, deceiving and indoctrinating the Africans to be blind to their oppression. In the eyes of many followers of Dr Williams African Christians are either perceived as ignorant or anti African people. They are viewed as those who work against the int...

Enculturation/Africanisation

Image
Enculturation is a term that was born out of a religious context but is currently used in different academic disciplines. In religion, the term can be used to refer to the process by which a particular religion for example the Christian faith, comes into a particular cultural context, makes convert, and goes on incarnating that culture for continuous and effective gospel communication. The result of that Christianity’s cultural incarnation is that the religion reaching out (Christianity) takes hold of the content of the culture by using its cultural concepts, but in turn, reflects the identity of that culture. This is to create continuity between the pre-Christian traditional religions of that area with the Christian faith. Africanisation also refers to the same thing as enculturation but with Africanisation, the focus is on the African context and its cultures (Starkloff 1992:69). Now in this study, we shall describe the religious aspect of enculturation/Africanisat...

Social Justice: Addressing the elephant in the room

INTRODUCTION Social Justice has been one of the most debated topics amongst believers in the 21st century, different camps have risen up and many churches have been divided over this issue. Statements have been issued out either for or against this topic. For example, we have the Statement on Social Justice and the Gospel which was made by John Macarthur and others which connected social justice with Cultural Marxism, in one of its clauses the statement speaking about social justice says “dangerous and false teachings that threaten the gospel, misrepresent Scripture, and lead people away from the grace of God in Jesus Christ (SJ&G 2018).” John Macarthur considers the social justice movement as the greatest threat he had to face in the church, this is due to his views that it is anti-scriptural and antithetical to the gospel. The Sovereign Nations’ organization a strict conservative and one of the prominent critics of social justice, held a conference under the topic “social...
